Locality:

Lavrion Mining District, Lavreotiki, East Attica, Attica, Greece

Dimensions:

7.6 x 4.3 x 7.8 cm

This specimen pairs smooth, often botryoidal smithsonite with contrasting layers of sphalerite and bright calcite.

This district in Attica has been mined since antiquity for silver, lead, and zinc, playing a key role in funding ancient Athens. The deposits are polymetallic, commonly producing secondary smithsonite over primary sphalerite with calcite.

Older specimens from Lavrion are increasingly collectible, as the area is now protected and no longer actively mined.
