The Kelly Mine in New Mexico’s Magdalena Mining District is famous for its blue to blue-green smithsonite, often called “Kelly Blue.” The mine became an important zinc producer in the early 1900s, when miners realized that rock previously mistaken for limestone contained valuable zinc carbonate ore. Smithsonite formed as zinc-rich deposits weathered, creating rounded, botryoidal surfaces that give many specimens their distinctive look.
