Locality:

Orange River Area, ZF Mgcawu District, Northern Cape, South Africa

Dimensions:

3 x 1.5 x 2.5cm

The Orange River forms much of the border between South Africa and Namibia and runs through a remote, mineral-rich part of the Northern Cape.

The area is known for alluvial diamond deposits, with diamonds carried downstream and concentrated in river gravels over millions of years. The Orange River has also been an important route for mining and prospecting across the region.

Quartz specimens from the area are often associated with iron oxides such as hematite, giving them a distinctive contrast between the clear quartz and dark reddish-brown coatings.
