Pyrite

The Merelani Hills are famous for its source of tanzanite, discovered in the area in 1967. The mining area contains numerous underground workings spread across the Merelani Hills. Although tanzanite is the locality’s best-known mineral, the mines have also produced a variety of other collector specimens, including pyrite. This makes pyrite from Merelani an interesting example of the mineral diversity found in one of Tanzania’s most famous mining regions.
