Malachite with Azurite
Drawer C-MN0364
Locality:
Arizona, USA
Dimensions:
6.5 x 5 x 3.5cm
This striking copper mineral association formed in the oxidized zone of a copper-rich deposit, where changing chemical conditions allowed both azurite and malachite to develop together over time. Azurite typically forms first in drier, carbon dioxide-rich environments, while continued exposure to water gradually alters portions of the azurite into vivid green malachite.
Arizona is world-renowned for its copper deposits and has produced some of the finest examples of these secondary minerals. The intense blue of azurite paired with the rich green of malachite reflects the ongoing transformation of copper minerals near the Earth’s surface, with each layer recording a different stage of oxidation and mineral replacement.
Bold in color and naturally contrasting, this specimen captures a dynamic moment in mineral evolution, preserving both the original formation and the transformation that followed.
