This tsavorite garnet comes from the Merelani Hills in northern Tanzania, a locality best known for producing really nice green grossular garnets. The deposits occur within metamorphic rocks of the Lelatema Mountains, where chromium-rich conditions are responsible for the gemstone’s vivid green color.
Tsavorite is the chromium- and vanadium-rich variety of grossular garnet. The Merelani area is also known as the world’s primary source of tanzanite, making it one of the most significant gemstone regions in East Africa. Specimens from this locality host a range of high quality gemmy minerals.
