Barra do Salinas is located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, one of Brazil’s most important pegmatite regions. Minas Gerais is famous for producing a huge variety of collector minerals, with many small mines and pegmatite workings scattered throughout the region.

The Coronel Murta area has produced mica minerals including muscovite and lepidolite, along with other classic pegmatite minerals. Specimens from this locality represent the diverse mineral production of the Jequitinhonha Valley.
