Fluorite
Drawer G-MN0388
Locality:
Purple Rain Pocket, Lady Annabella Mine, Eastgate, Weardale, County Durham, England
Dimensions:
3 x 2 x 4.5cm
Recovered from the famous “Purple Rain Pocket” of the Lady Annabella Mine, this fluorite formed within mineralized fractures cutting through the limestone of England’s historic Northern Pennine Orefield. Over time, fluorine-bearing solutions cooled in open cavities, allowing sharply defined fluorite crystals to develop with the vivid purple coloration that made this pocket especially celebrated among collectors.
Weardale fluorite is internationally admired for its exceptional color, transparency, and strong daylight fluorescence. Material from the Purple Rain Pocket became particularly sought after due to its saturated violet tones, glassy luster, and beautifully isolated crystal growth. Subtle changes in chemistry during formation often produced internal zoning and phantom-like layers within the crystals.
Luminous, geometric, and intensely colored, this specimen captures the elegance of classic English fluorite from one of the most memorable modern discoveries in Weardale.
