Cryolite and Siderite on Sphalerite

Cryolite and Siderite on Sphalerite

Drawer G-MN0348

$60.00 USD

Locality:

Ivigtut, Arsuk Fjord, Semersooq, Greenland

Dimensions:

3 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm

This exceptional specimen formed in one of the most unusual and historically important ore deposits on Earth, where cryolite crystallized alongside sulfide and carbonate minerals within a rare alkaline hydrothermal system. The Ivigtut deposit is the world’s classic and type locality for cryolite, long mined for industrial aluminum production and celebrated for its unique mineral assemblages.

Here, translucent cryolite forms the primary matrix, hosting sharp rhombohedra of siderite and metallic sphalerite that developed during later stages of mineralization. These associations reflect multiple pulses of hydrothermal activity, each introducing different chemical conditions into the evolving deposit.

Striking in both rarity and geology, this piece captures a mineral system found almost nowhere else on Earth—an elegant record of complex chemistry preserved within Greenland’s legendary cryolite mine
