Majahunga (Mahajanga) is a coastal region in northwestern Madagascar, an area known for producing a variety of mineral specimens. Madagascar has become one of the world's important sources of unusual quartz formations.

Scepters forms when a later crystal grows wider at the top than the earlier crystal beneath it, creating its distinctive scepter-like shape. Amethyst scepters from Madagascar are especially popular with collectors for their unusual crystal growth and purple coloration.
