Sphalerite on Galena
Drawer G-MN0316
Locality:
Tri-State Area, USA
Dimensions:
3.5 x 3.5 x 3cm
This specimen formed in Mississippi Valley–type hydrothermal deposits, where zinc- and lead-rich fluids crystallized within open fractures of the host rock. First forming as metallic galena, later stages introduced sphalerite, which grew across and alongside the earlier crystals.
The Tri-State Mining District, spanning parts of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma, is one of the classic American lead-zinc regions, known for producing well-crystallized sulfide associations.
With its contrast of bright metallic galena and darker sphalerite, this piece reflects multiple stages of mineral deposition in one of the most historic mining areas of the United States.
