Smithsonite and olivenite from Lavrion come from one of Greece’s oldest mining districts, where mining dates back more than 2,500 years. The ancient mines were an important source of silver for Athens, while later mining continued into the modern era.

The old workings around Lavrion are known for their unusual variety of secondary minerals. Finding smithsonite and olivenite together makes this a nice example of the diverse mineralization preserved throughout the district.
