The Tantara Mine is in the Shinkolobwe area of the Katanga Copperbelt, a region famous for its long history of copper and cobalt mining.

Shinkolobwe became particularly known in the 20th century for its uranium mines, which supplied uranium used in the Manhattan Project during World War II. The area has also produced a remarkable variety of copper minerals, including shattuckite.

Shattuckite from this region are valued for their deep blue color and botryoidal or fibrous forms, making them recognizable pieces from the historic Katanga mineral district.
