The Serpieri Mine is part of the Kamariza mining area, an important sections of the Lavrion Mining District. Mining at Lavrion dates back to ancient Greece, when silver from the area helped support the growth of Athens.

The Serpieri Mine is particularly notable because serpierite was named after the locality. It is one of the minerals that gives the mine a special place in mineral collecting history. The surrounding Kamariza workings have also produced many unusual secondary minerals, making Lavrion one of Greece’s classic collector districts.
