Quartz on Tennantite
Drawer C-MN0372
Locality:
Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Oshikoto Region, Namibia
Dimensions:
8 x 4.5 x 4.5cm
This striking mineral association formed within the exceptionally complex hydrothermal ore system of the Tsumeb Mine, one of the world’s most famous mineral localities. Tennantite crystallized first from copper-, arsenic-, and iron-rich fluids deep within the deposit, later followed by clear quartz that developed across and around the earlier metallic crystals during successive stages of mineralization.
The Tsumeb Mine is legendary for its extraordinary mineral diversity and highly aesthetic specimens, produced through multiple episodes of hydrothermal activity over millions of years. The dark metallic luster of tennantite contrasted against transparent quartz highlights the changing chemistry and conditions within the evolving ore body.
Sharp, reflective, and intricately layered, this specimen preserves a detailed record of crystal growth from one of the most iconic mining localities in mineralogical history.
