Minium is a bright red-orange lead oxide found at Broken Hill, one of Australia’s most famous mineral localities. What makes these specimens unusual is how they formed: underground mine fires in the late 1800s and early 1900s altered existing lead minerals, leaving minium in their place. The material often preserves the original shape of cerussite crystals, even though the mineral itself has changed.
