Grängesberg, in central Sweden, was one of the country’s major iron-mining districts, with mining dating back to at least the 16th century and ending in 1989. The deposit is especially known for its large iron-oxide bodies, made up mainly of magnetite with hematite and apatite. “Siebensternerz,” or “seven-star ore,” is a historic German collecting term associated with distinctive magnetite and hematite specimens. This piece comes from the Westenberger Collection.
