Iridescent Goethite
Drawer G-MN0377
Locality:
Bukit Ketata, Pekan District, Pahang, Malaysia
Dimensions:
2 x 2 x 3.5cm
Formed through the natural weathering and oxidation of iron-bearing minerals, this goethite developed as layered iron oxide growths within the tropical mineral deposits of Bukit Ketata. Over time, subtle surface alterations created an ultra-thin film across the specimen, producing the vivid iridescent colors that shift and shimmer under changing light.
Material from the Pekan District is especially admired for its intense rainbow coloration and sculptural texture, qualities enhanced by the humid conditions and iron-rich geology of the region. Unlike metallic minerals that derive color from their chemistry alone, the rainbow effect seen here is caused by light interference across the mineral’s microscopic surface layers.
Bold, reflective, and constantly changing in appearance, this specimen captures the interplay between mineral formation, oxidation, and light itself.
