Fluorite Pseudo. Calcite
Drawer C-MN0435
Locality:
Mina El Carmen, Santa Eulalia Mining District, Chihuahuah Mexico
Dimensions:
5 x 4 x 1.5cm
Mina El Carmen is part of the historic Santa Eulalia Mining District, a region known for its lead, zinc, silver, and fluorite mineralization. The district has produced hundreds of mineral species and is considered one of Mexico's classic mineral localities.
In this specimen, fluorite has replaced a pre-existing calcite crystal while retaining the original calcite crystal shape. This type of replacement, known as a pseudomorph, records a change in mineral-forming conditions within the deposit. Santa Eulalia is particularly well known for producing these fluorite-after-calcite replacements, making them a characteristic feature of the district.
