The Keweenaw Peninsula is a famous native copper locality. Indigenous peoples mined and worked copper here thousands of years before large-scale commercial mining began in the 1800s.

During the Michigan Copper Rush, the Keweenaw became one of the United States’ most important mining regions. Native copper is the locality’s signature mineral, while native silver has also been found associated with copper in several of the region’s historic mines.
