Cassiterite var. Wood Tin

Santa María del Oro is a mining locality in San Luis Potosí, an area with a long history of silver and other metal mining. The surrounding region contains numerous old workings and prospects that have produced a variety of less common minerals.

Wood Tin is a distinctive variety of cassiterite that forms in rounded, botryoidal or fibrous masses rather than the sharp individual crystals more commonly associated with cassiterite. Material from this locality is an uncommon example of wood tin from Mexico and is of particular interest to collectors because of its unusual texture and growth form.
