Pinos is a historic mining town in southeastern Zacatecas, founded in 1594 during the Spanish colonial period. Silver mining played a major role in the town's early development.

Cassiterite from Pinos is an uncommon mineral occurrence compared with the area's better-known silver minerals. Specimens from the locality are of interest because they represent a less common part of the mineral history of this old Mexican mining district.
