Touissit is part of the Touissit-Bou Beker mining district near Morocco’s border with Algeria. Mining began in the early 1900s, and the district became an important producer of lead and zinc.
The mines are known for their extensive underground workings and large mine dumps, which have produced many specimens collected from the district. Touissit is particularly recognized for well-formed azurite and malachite specimens.
