Amethyst Scepters
Drawer M-MN0362
Locality:
Majahunaga, Madagascar
Dimensions:
2.5 x 2 x 1.5cm
These amethyst scepters formed through a rare two-stage crystal growth process deep within mineral-rich cavities. An initial quartz crystal first developed under stable conditions, creating the slender “stem.” Later, changing chemistry and temperature introduced a second phase of growth, depositing a broader cap of richly colored amethyst over the original crystal tip and producing the distinctive scepter shape.
The purple coloration comes from trace amounts of iron within the quartz structure combined with natural irradiation over long periods of time. Madagascar, particularly the Majahunga region, is known for producing especially elegant scepter formations with strong color zoning, sharp terminations, and excellent clarity.
Naturally sculptural and highly collectible, these crystals preserve a visible record of changing geological conditions—capturing two separate moments of growth within a single specimen.
