Akaganeite from the Nantan meteorite is associated with one of China’s best-known meteorite falls. The Nantan meteorite fell in 1516 during the Ming Dynasty, scattering iron meteorite fragments across Nandan County. Thousands of kilograms of material were recovered from the fall area over time.

Akaganeite forms as a weathering product of iron meteorites, developing as the metal reacts with moisture and the surrounding environment. Its presence records the long terrestrial weathering history of the Nantan meteorite after its fall.
