Morgan Brown is a Pennsylvania-based mineral dealer and dedicated field collector whose work is rooted in a lifelong passion for the geology of the Keystone State. Raised in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Morgan’s fascination with minerals began before grade school while collecting pristine quartz crystals from his grandfather’s mountainside garden. What started as childhood curiosity quickly developed into a disciplined and deeply informed pursuit of mineral collecting.
Morgan earned his degree in Environmental Geoscience, where his enthusiasm for minerals was quickly recognized by faculty. Though his formal coursework extended beyond traditional mineralogy, he was frequently given opportunities to participate in field projects, research sampling, and geological investigations. During this time, he gained hands-on experience with core sampling, mineral occurrence documentation, and the study of Pennsylvania’s complex stratigraphy. As historic Pennsylvania Geological Survey publications were digitized, Morgan immersed himself in the state’s mineralogical literature—laying the foundation for the focused, locality-driven collecting approach that defines his work today.
Professionally, Morgan’s career in environmental consulting and infrastructure projects provided rare access to cross-sections of Pennsylvania’s diverse geologic environments. These experiences allowed him to observe, document, and occasionally recover specimens from both obscure occurrences and historically significant mining regions. His involvement in environmental compliance at a developing smoky quartz locality in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region further expanded his hands-on experience, granting him direct access to material including glassy elestial smoky quartz, water-clear points, and large milky quartz crystals.
Morgan specializes in Pennsylvania minerals, with particular emphasis on classic and lesser-known occurrences from defunct lead-zinc mines and historic industrial sites. His foremost passion, however, is pyromorphite. A devoted student of the apatite group, he has assembled an extensive suite of pyromorphite specimens from worldwide localities, alongside strong representation from Pennsylvania’s renowned southeastern deposits. His broader collection includes native metals, sulfosalts, northeastern U.S. classics, Michigan copper country material, and important European specimens, including notable suites from England, Ireland, Tsumeb, Mexico, Arizona, and Mashamba.
Through the M.C. Brown Collection, Morgan combines field-collected material with carefully curated acquisitions, offering specimens that reflect both geological significance and aesthetic merit. Known for appreciating unusual, underrepresented, and historically important pieces, he seeks minerals that tell a story—whether through crystal form, paragenesis, locality history, or rarity.
Beyond the specimens themselves, Morgan values the mineral community deeply. He regularly participates in shows throughout the Northeast and considers the relationships built with fellow collectors and dealers to be among the most meaningful aspects of his work. The annual pilgrimage to Tucson remains a highlight of his year, where the exchange of knowledge, specimens, and camaraderie continues to inspire his collecting and dealing pursuits.
Morgan remains committed to field collecting across Pennsylvania whenever time allows, with an ever-growing list of historic sites and geological targets still waiting to be explored.
